Protective hairstyle on transitioning hair.

June 14, 2013

A long term transition can be quite challenging for someone who is used to having straight hair all the time, I have decided to avoid the straight hair styles because I would have to use heat to straighten my hair. and since i´m still on the Gahl length retention challenge 2013 which doesn´t allow me to use direct heat on my hair until August. I have to find other ways to manage my hair.
I have already began treating my hair as if it were fully natural by trying out hair styles I have seen done by
natural hair  ladies on you tube.
If you would like to recreate this protective hairstyle below is a step by step description of how I achieved it.
The final look

So for this Hair do we will need:
  1. Lots of bobby pins
  2. A soft brush to lay down the edges
  3. Gel or styling cream/ lotion to tame edges and fly away hairs.

Step 1.

Part your hair into four sections, part the crown depending on how big you would like your bangs to be at the end.

Step 2.

Moisturise the two sections above the ears, if you need to keep your edges flat, this would be the best time to either apply your styling cream or hair Gel. Either roll the hair or do a flat twist and make sure to do a two strand twist/ roll until you reach the ends of the hair.

Step 3 & 4.

Moisturise the hair hair at the back and use your brush to make sure it looks neat. Then pin down the twists as shown. Depending on how long your hair is you might want to fold the twists to make them easier to work with.

Step 5

Roll and tuck the remaining hair into your twist and use some pins to secure the hair.

Step 6.

Pin down the sides to achieve the shape you want.

Step 7.

Moisturise your crown.
You can add a little styling cream at this point if you feel the need to. Again use your brush to make the hair neat then proceed to make a loose two strand twist.

Step 8 & 9.

Tuck your ends into the base of the twist. Depending on how long your hair is, you might want to fold the twist and pin it down. Use pins to secure the hair and to achieve the look you desire.

I am still looking for more hairstyles to try out and would love it if you ladies gave me more suggestions :)

  3. I am so so glad I found this page. I'm African too and I have been trying to grow my hair beyond shoulder length for the longest. I recently had it cut pretty short and I plan on growing it out from now on. I do have a few questions that I really hope you can answer.

How do you go a few days without combing your hair? I comb my hair every single day and I notice it pulls some of my hair out.
I'm also transitioning to texlaxed hair from relaxed, do you have any tips on that?
I try to wrap my hair every night but by morning I feel like it loses its bounce. Also back to the combing thing, when I unwrap my hair I have to comb it to get it down. Any ideas on how I can do this without breaking too much hair.
Finally, I need advice on an everyday moisturizer!
I'm also a college student to money and time is quite hard to come by when it comes to dealing with my hair.

    1. Hi Ya Haddy,
      Nice to meet you!
learning not to comb your hair daily takes time, instead of going a whole week you can try every two days, then to every three days and so on. With time you will find it very easy to leave your hair alone. What really helps me do this to keep one hairstyle all through the week. This way i don´t have to mess with my hair too much( I mostly wear buns). To keep my hair neat all the time i just use a brush and some moisturizer to lay down the edges and it works perfectly :)

I personally feel that wrapping the hair on a daily basis may be to much manipulation on your hair. especially since you are texlaxing your line of demarcation does not need too much manipulation, otherwise you will end up with unwanted breakage. Opt for other hairstyles, Buns are great!

As for moisturisers there are so many good ones out there. Here is a post we did on how to pick out a good one and another on a few I have tried out. Finding a good moisturiser is much easier once you know which ingredients to look for and you can pick one in your budget range.I hope this helps.
