Grow African Hair Long GAHL

  • A long term transition can be quite challenging for someone who is used to having straight hair all the time, I have decided to avoid the straight hair styles because I would have to use heat to straighten my hair. and since i´m still on the Gahl length retention challenge 2013 which doesn´t allow me to use direct heat on my hair until August. I have to find other ways to manage my hair.
I have already began treating my hair as if it were fully natural by trying out hair styles I have seen done by
natural hair  ladies on you tube.
If you would like to recreate this protective hairstyle below is a step by step description of how I achieved it.
    The final look

So for this Hair do we will need:
    1. Lots of bobby pins
    2. A soft brush to lay down the edges
    3. A moisturiser.
    4. Gel or styling cream/ lotion to tame edges and fly away hairs.

    Step 1.

Part your hair into four sections, part the crown depending on how big you would like your bangs to be at the end.

Step by step pictorial of the hairstyle

    Step 2.

Moisturise the two sections above the ears, if you need to keep your edges flat, this would be the best time to either apply your styling cream or hair Gel. Either roll the hair or do a flat twist and make sure to do a two strand twist/ roll until you reach the ends of the hair.

    Step 3 & 4.

Moisturise the hair hair at the back and use your brush to make sure it looks neat. Then pin down the twists as shown. Depending on how long your hair is you might want to fold the twists to make them easier to work with.

    Step 5

Roll and tuck the remaining hair into your twist and use some pins to secure the hair.

    Step 6.

Pin down the sides to achieve the shape you want.

Using bobby pins to achieve the desired shape

    Step 7.

    Moisturise your crown.
You can add a little styling cream at this point if you feel the need to. Again use your brush to make the hair neat then proceed to make a loose two strand twist.

    Step 8 & 9.

Tuck your ends into the base of the twist. Depending on how long your hair is, you might want to fold the twist and pin it down. Use pins to secure the hair and to achieve the look you desire.

I am still looking for more hairstyles to try out and would love it if you ladies gave me more suggestions :)

It has been 12 weeks since I got my last relaxer and even though I have quite some new growth, my hair is still quite easy to manage so I will keep stretching out my relaxer until I cannot manage it any more. Until then I will stick to my beloved protective hairstyles.
Here is the protective style I will be rocking this week.

I don´t have that much new growth at 5 weeks post but my edges just will not lie flat sometimes, Yesterday was one of those days. So took my home made moisturiser ( water & Glycerin), sprayed it all over but not getting my hair wet. Then i applied some coconut oil and then finger combed my hair up since i wanted to try out a high donut bun like Aphro´s, I have always done Donut buns but they were all just low ones as you can see below.

So after smoothing my edges down with my soft brush i applied a scarf on my head for at least ten minutes and this really did the trick! my edges were down and behaving. I loved the bun ;-)

Since i´m still stretching my relaxer and on the no heat challenge till september 2012, i try to do low maintenance and protective styles that don´t require and heat or combing.
I have a lot of new growth which i touch only once a week when i wash or twice a week if i decide to condition wash my hair in between.
This time i went for a high bun, i´m trying to vary the position of my bun to avoid putting stress on only one area which might cause breakage.

I get my edges flat by applying my moisturiser and then tying the edges down with a scarf, works like a charm. sometimes i use aloe vera gel but i have currently run out of that.

I Finally bought myself  a hercules Sägemann seamless comb and i must say i love it. This is the most expensive comb in my collection but it is worth every cent goes for about 11 Euros. It does a great job at detangling and i have less snagging of  hair while using it. So this was definitely a good investment.

What´s your thought on seamless combs?

    Thanks for Reading!

    Yours

What do I mean by the Title? is there a way of `wearing braids` correctly?

Well if one is in  a Healthy Hair Journey then any 'protective style has to be worn correctly. Most women use Braids and weaves to escape taking care of there hairs or actually to evade a hair issue that needs to be sorted out. eg Breakage

Prior to this I hadn't braided my hair for almost a year and to be Honest i was scared of the thought of having a set back in my Healthy hair Journey by not being able to take care of my hair as I should.I however went on and had medium/large size braids done.....I knew I had to get into this with a regimen that was really gonna work otherwise I would be risking some good progress..I came up with a regimen and adhered to it religiously until i took off the braids...

So I removed my braids after almost four weeks…3 weeks 4days to be precise..(never keep them in too long)
My Immediate remark was that: ‘This was a great success’.
I went to the Salon to get help removing the braids and the ladies went on and on about how clean ,healthy and moisturised my hair was *Blushes*.After they removed the braids I gently finger combed my hair focusing on separating strands carefully wherever there were build-ups (which were very few) at the bottom of the strands. NB…Build-ups will break off your hair if you do not pay attention separating strands bound together by them.
Anyways, After finger combing, that’s when I combed my hair from ends to roots using my wide-tooth comb and then proceeded to wash…I had decided that’s how much help I needed from the Salon cause I had missed giving my tresses some TLC…so deep Conditioning , both Protein and Moisture were done at home the following morning!
My hair felt amazingly soft yet strong….

    Cons???

The amount of hair I ‘seemed’ to have lost was so much…check out pic but then again..if I was to do a little maths and multiply 80-100 strands shed a day by 25 days….that is a lot of hair. So quite a big ball of hair should be expected after all the combing, washing and detangling!

Many Thanks to all the ladies on www.growafricanhairlong.ning.com who offer lots of their routines, failures etc on our special group for ladies wearing extensions for protective styling!
Below is the one thing that made this work!!!- My Self made Braids Spray

You can choose to make your own or buy a 'good' one that will work..
     Ingredients + tools:
    1. Pure/99% Aloe vera Juice - 50% (more is water is not used)
    2. Glycerine - 20%( can be very sticky if you use too much)
    3. water (optional) - 20%
    4. Leave in Conditioner( I used Africa's best Tea tree pictured and reviewed somewhere within the blog-its a rinse and leave in too) - 1 -2 Teaspoons
    5. An Oil (in my case Grape seed oil) - 5-10%
    6. Spray Bottle
Please always make sure when using Aloe vera juice it is mixed with an oil as it can be very drying on its own!
So what I would do was to make just a little spray at a time to last me say 3 days and make some more once that was finished.I felt that having the leave-in that doubled as rinse out conditioner eliminated the worry of having to Deep Condition my hair weekly.I do not have like proper measurements of the Quantities I was mixing up.I basically just used my own discretion to make something that worked...the percentages next to the Ingredients above try to estimate the portions used.
I spritzed my braids every two days paying close attention to where my ends were....I washed the braids , towel blotted and air-dried after the first 2 weeks..

Do you have a braids regimen that works? Please share yours in the comment boxes below..
