Natural african hair and knots!!!!

September 26, 2014

Since ending my long-term transition to natural hair, my hair care routine has been very simple. I basically just condition my hair, comb every two weeks and shampoo only when I feel the need to. But now I think that I will have to change a few things because my hair is full of knots!!!!
wash and go pony puff

I have decided to comb every time I wash my hair and I will be twisting or braiding my hair after detangling properly to help with the knots and tangles, my hair is very curly/coily and especially the curls in the middle of my head are tighter so the hair just knots easily. On many occasions the knots were so bad that I could not unravel them with my fingers so I ended up having to cut them off which is really bad because I am trying to retain as much length as possible.

Ladies how do you keep your hair from tangling and knotting? I will appreciate any tips you have to offer.

Stay Blessed!

  1. SSK (Single Strand Knots) are the bane of every natural. I discovered that my hair forms less SSK when I keep it stretched. I always twist or braid it after every wash day. I never, ever, allow it to dry and shrink upon itself. I never attempt any WnG because of my 4b/4c hair, the strands just love clumping together. I also keep the ends of my hair very moisturized and sealed. Hope this helps.

    1. Thank you very much, I will definitely be trying out your method for my next wash. My hair is very curly and shrinks a lot too. my curls/ coils just clump together and into each other. Letting it dry in twists or braids sounds really good.

    1. My sister´s hair is doing great and it is very healthy. She is still relaxed but is kind of considering going natural. However she does love straight hair so i am guessing she will stay relaxed. You are right Eva has not blogged in a very long time but that is just because she recently became a new mummy to a lovely baby boy :) and me a proud aunty of course :) I will make her blog soon :)

    1. Even though I am not Joan, I can try to answer you. I normally spray my head with ACV to cleanse the scalp and to also get rid of all the gunk that accumulates from product build up. I follow this up with a moisturizing DC. I do this once every 2 weeks or weekly depending on how dusty it is and how active I have been. My scalp loves oil and I apply to it my mixture of coconut, EVOO and castor.
I transitioned for 10 months and I know how the new growth can be a pain :D The trick in coping with it is to keep it moisturized by co washing, regular DCing, and using leave in conditioners. Protective styling can also become your best friend during your relaxer stretching because it keeps your hair tucked away. Always keep your new growth stretched by making braids or twisting.

    2. Hi there Anonymous, sorry for the late response and i am glad you already got very useful information. I will add on a little information. while your hair is in a sew in try to use diluted products. as in mix your conditioners with lot´s of water to avoid unnecessary build up.
as for softening your hair, for me the best ingredient is glycerin. get yourself a spray bottle put in 90% water and 10% glycerin then add a few drops of oil into the mixture and use this mixture to moisturize your hair on a regular basis. depending on how fast your hair loses moisture you might have to repeat the process more often. Thank you :) if there is any other way i can assist you please let me know.
