I relaxed my hair a few weeks ago and i just thought i should share with you guys how i do it and what rules i try my best to follow. Relaxers should only be applied to the new growth and should be left on the hair only for the time recommended by the manufacturer. If these "rules" are not followed relaxers can damage the hair and even cause scabs on the scalp.

I am so sorry guys it was a busy weekend and I am actually already 3 days post!I relaxed my hair on Friday 2nd Dec at almost 18 weeks post.I used ORS NO-lye relaxer in Normal strength.I had been thinking about doing it at home but because of the length and quantity of the new Growth I did go to a salon...I love my results and my new length.I instructed the hair dresser to wash off the relaxer quite early because i didn't want bone-straight lifeless looking hair....she adhered and I am pleased...below are Steps 3 and 4 that I did before my relaxer.
Following my previous post of steps 1 & 2

    Step3
    Protect those ends
On the same days of my relaxer, just before I went to the salon, I generously applied Vaseline to the length of my hair (the already relaxed hair).Any good oil such as castor oil or even a thick conditioner could do the job!
I avoided greasing my New growth so as to have good relaxer results. The aim of this step is to avoid re-relaxing the already processed  length during relaxer rinse off.(the run down of the chemical would be all over you already processed hair and if there is no coating over it, it would mean relaxing the strands again!!
I think this is best done at home in case your saloonist decides your are being way over the top!

    Step4
just after my relaxer was rinsed off......
I instructed the lady to protein - condition my hair even before Neutralizing. The reason for this was to' reinstall' protein into the hair shafts whilst my cuticles were still open from the relaxing process. After this is when she neutralized any remaining relaxer from my hair. She neutralized numerous times and kept it in quite long before the final rinse....

I only used a blow drier to dry my hair after the relaxer as I am striving to avoid the Flat Iron!
    Pics coming soonest!

Today is Monday, the 28th of Nov 2011.I am currently 4months 1week and  2days post last relaxer.(about 17+ weeks).
I have so much new growth and I am so looking foward to this relaxer.I am taking necessary measures to make sure that the process will be a success and despite using a chemical on my NG, my processed hair must remain strong and healthy!
The count down from today is about 6days to the relaxer.Looking to relax on Saturday. What I have done to my hair is the STEP 1 of preparing for my relaxer!

    STEP 1:
CLARIFY HAIR WITH A CLARIFYING SHAMPOO
This is an important step before relaxing so as to strip of the hair of any Products that have built up during the previous week.Hair should be very clean and product free to maximize the relaxing process.I did not have a 'clarifying shampoo' in the house so I just use my Motions Neutralizing shampoo- my hair does feel squeaky clean! You could do it differently and use other shampoos such as ORS Creamy aloe but I would think any sulphate bsaed poo should be able to strip your hair.I will only apply products to the length of my hair and not my NG in the remaining days whilst I wait for my relaxer. If you desire an underprocessed result you could keep up with your normal regimen but I prefer properly processed hair. This step should be done at around 5days before your relaxer.

    STEP 2
    PROTEIN TREATMENT
Its been years since I used an actual EGG  for a protein treatment and that's what I feel like today. Its after the clarifying wash this morning and the egg treatment, I am gonna do it over night to save on time.I will mix my oils namely; castor oil, teatree oil, sweet almond and any other natural oil I can get my hands on into my 1 or 2 egg mixture(depending on size). The oils will counteract the drying effects of the egg protein to the length of my hair.
The purpose of a protein treatment at this stage (which could be any brand of your choice such as ORS MAYO) is to fortify your strands as you go into the relaxing process because the relaxer manipulates protein bonds in your hair strands.
PS; Depending on the 'protein needs'  of your hair, you would choose amongst, Heavy, medium and light protein treatments to use for this process

After step 1 and 2, I'll try to keep my hands off my scalp, not to scratch an itch etc..this will help minimize chances of relaxer burning!

Recently i have been doing some research on shampoos and this is what i have come up with. There are different types of shampoos out there and i will just mention them briefly.

    • Clarifying shampoo.
These shampoos mainly contain acetic acid which literaly strips all build up from hair products and also the hair´s natural oil(sebum) leaving it squeaky clean. these shampoos should never be used too often especially if you have naturaly dry hair i would say if you have hair type 3c & all type 4´s.(to find out what your hair type is please view this blog http://growafricanhairlong.ning.com/profiles/blogs/hair-type-chart ) Using them too often only dries out your hair even more.
Apple cider vinegar ( very diluted) can also be used to clarify the hair since it does contain acetic acid. in conclusion shampoos with a low pH clarify the hair. (acetic acid has a pH of 2.4)

    •      Daily shampoos
Daily shampoos are usualy moisturising shampoos and often contain moisturising agents. these can be used more often especially if they do not contain sulfates. However you should also go for those with a neutral pH these have the same pH 5.5 as your skin and hair and will clean your hair but will not strip it of it´s oils. These shampoos cannot remove all product build up and therefore it is advisable to cleanse your hair every 4 to 6 weeks. These shampoos are suitable for dry hair. I have realised that there are some baby shampoos with a pH of between 5 and 7 and these are great and tear free. water has a pH of  7 too. the closer you are to your skins natural pH the better.

how do you know what pH your shampoo contains?

invest in litmus paper( pH paper) this changes colour when dipped in a solution. if it´s acidic it turns red and if it´s alkaline it turns blue. it also comes with a chart where you can check the different pH levels. if your shampoo is acidic and you would like to neutralise it. it sometimes helps to add water to it( Note: not to the whole bottle just the bit you want to use).

    what to avoid in shampoos.
avoid shampoos containing sulfates e.g sodium laureth/lauryl sulphates these just dry out your hair. some baby shampoos do not contain sulfates. next time you go looking for a good shampoo just check the ingredients list.

Had anyone asked me about being able to find good products for a healthy hair journey in Nairobi just a few weeks ago I would have argued against the possibility of  doing so...I was more than amazed just a few days ago when I walked into Nakumatt Mega (Msa road) and of course went down the hair and beauty Isle...We've got it all Ladies..from Elasta QP butters, relaxer & shampoos to Wave Noveou  mists and lotions to IC Fantasia heat protectors and even hesh,Amla and Brahmi Indian Powders!!!I was honestly dumb founded or should I say over excited???Nakumatt also stocks some kenyan made essentials such as Glycerine and Castor oil. There is no excuse whatsoever for any African lady in this country to have a failed hair journey or should I say not to be in a healthy hair Journey at all!

What  your hair looks like when it comes out of your scalp may either be geneticaly predetermined or just a matter of nutrition. some people geneticaly have fine hair but this does not mean that their hair is not healthy. one way to tell if your hair is healthy is to check what it looks like immediately after it has been washed and dried without the use of any heat appliances e.g blow drier. you will notice some sheen in healthy hair whereas unhealthy hair will just look dull. Adding heat to your hair may be deceiving since it makes the hair look shinier and healtheir than it really is. you can do your hair and your whole body a huge favour by just eating right. Remember that your hair is not a vital organ( vital organs include the heart, liver, kidneys, skin e.t.c) so your body will will first supply nutrients to all other vital organs before it gets to your hair and nails. Your hair and nails literally get only the left overs so you have to eat enough to have some left overs for your hair.
your hair needs the following nutrients in order to flourish.
    1. Proteins. your hair is made up a lot of proteins so eating more proteins will help your hair grow stronger and healthier.
    2. Water. I know drinking water is a big task for most people i am one of them but i´m trying my best to drink enough water. This does not only keep your hair healthy but it also cuts the risk of getting kidney stones, helps with digestion, blood circulation, moisturises your skin and makes it glow e.t.c the benefits of driniking water are endless. drinking at least 8 glasses of water daily will ensure you get all these benefits.
    3. Vitamins A, B; E & biotin. these vitamins are important for healthy hair growth, they can also be supplemented if you don´t get enough of them through the foods you eat. however supplement vitamins shouldn´t replace a healthy diet.
here´s a list of great healthy hair foods.

Beans are rich in iron, proteins, Zinc and biotin.

Fish are rich in fatty acids, proteins vitamin B 12 .

Eggs are rich in protein, vitamin B12 and biotin( great for healthy hair, nails and skin).

Nuts contain fatty acids, zinc and selenium which are very important for a healthy scalp.
Eating foods rich in fatty acids will keep you from getting dry scalp because it locks in moisture in the skin.

Green leafy vegetables such as spinach & sukuma wiki contains lots of iron and vitamins.

Note: When a consistent healthy diet is practised a change in hair condition can be observed after three months.

This week i ran out of my lustra silk mango shea butter cholesterol and i decided to get the tea tree organics cholesterol. i used it to deep condition my hair today and i must say my hair loves this stuff too. i didn´t deep condition with heat but i put on a plastic bag and a winter hat on top of  it. I let it sit like that for about an hour and then i went on to rinse off the conditioner. due to the heat from my head and the hat + plastic bag it became so hot( honestly just like with the drier only takes longer). detangling was so easy!!! i do this under the shower. my hair turned out very soft and i really can´t complain. This is one of my best moisturising deep conditioners.

The product manufacturers also state that this conditioner can be used as a leave in too.

Finding a good moisturiser can be very tricky at times, mainly because everybody´s hair is different and has different needs. I prefer using water based moisturisers, normaly these have water/aqua as the first ingredient. other moisturising agents that i look for in a moisturiser are glycerin & Aloe Vera. i try to avoid moisturisers that contain mineral oil, petroleum or petrolatum.

My favourite moisturisers are  the wave nouveau finishing lotion, scurl no drip & kids organic shea butter conditioning and detangling hair lotion. All three work great on my hair and the keep my hair moisturised and soft.

i alternate buying them so i never have them all at once. i feel that it is good to have an option so that just in case one runs out even in shops there is still a plan B. However i do feel that scurl works better on my new growth so i use it more when i have some new grwoth that needs to be tamed. It really softens the new growth. I think it would be great for someone who has completely natural hair too!

Tip: Try out different products and find out what is best for your hair, you can always check the ingredients list and only take products with ingredients you like andn are good for hair in generaly. with this in mind you can never go wrong in making a product choice.

another great way to moisturise your hair is of course wetting it. you can just use a spray bottle to spray some water on your hair to keep it from drying out. regular washes will help with adding moisture to your hair too.  dry hair breaks much faster than well moisturised hair.

my regimen in winter and in summer is pretty much the same but my hair seems to dry out faster in winter than in the summer months. So what i do is step up my moisturising and i laso try to incorporate as many humectants to my regimen as possible.( A humectant is a substance that draws water from the environment to your hair) these include Honey which i add to my deep conditioners and glycerin which i add to my leave in, deep conditioner and even my shampoo. however i find that using too much glycerin my cause the hair to become mushy or sticky so finding the right amount for one´s hair is also very important.

    protective styles in winter.
In winter i prefer only protective styles that really hide my ends e.g buns. apart from that i always wear a cap/ hat when outdoors this protects my hair from the cold.
Other good protective styles for winter include braids, weaves, scarves e.t.c

Tip: if you hair feels extra dry and you don´t feel like washing or it is not your washday you can use the baggy method. just moisturise your hair with a water based moisturiser then cover your hair with a plastic bag. leave this on a for some time until your hair feels moist. then just seal in that moisture with a light oil of choice.

    Drink lots of water!!!!!!!!

Since starting my healthy hair journey i have come to learn a lot about hair care. One of the most important lesson i learnt was that growing my hair longer had very little to do with products. there are good products out there which will definitely improve the health and length of your hair but you will have the biggest role to play and not these products.  your habits and practices will greatly determine how your hair will look and how long you can get it to grow. all you need to do is to forget all those black hair myths and start a healthy hair journey (HHJ). here are a few tips to get you started.
    • Be patient.
This is very important. growing hair longer takes time. it does not happen overnight and therefore you will need a lot of patience. try out products and find out which ones exactly work best for you, remember everyone´s hair is different and has different needs. what works for your sister may not necessarily  work for you. Get your hair healthy first and then start focusing on gaining length. but from experince i know that healthy hair grows, as soon as you get your hair healthy the length will come automaticaly.
    • Stay  away from too much heat.
Heat is one of the major causes of hair damage, using blow driers, flat irons, curling irons and other forms of direct heat dry out the hair and cause the ends to split. opt for air drying or if you have to use heat invest in a hooded drier it is much safer.
    • Wash your hair weekly.
Washing your hair weekly will keep your scalp and hair clean. A clean scalp is healthy and will produce healthy hair. clean hair is much easier to manage than dirty hair. However avoid using shampoos containing sulfates these only dry out your hair more and may cause damage to your hair.
    • Condition your hair weekly
Deep conditioning weekly will  help to moisturise your hair and maintain it´s manageability. remember to alternate between protein and moisture deep conditioners. a balance of the two will keep your hair strong, elastic and healthy.
    • Moisturise and seal daily.
African hair is naturaly prone to dryness so it is very important to keep it well moisturised. dry hair will automatically break more easily.  get yourself a good daily moisturiser preferably mineral oil/ petroleum free since these only clog your hairshaft. after moisturising coat your hair with a light oil like coconut oil in order to seal in the moisture. depending on how dry your hair is this can be done once to twice a day.
    • Do not grease your scalp or hair
Avoid using grease on your scalp and hair. grease mainly contains mineral oil or petroleum e.g vaseline  which clogs the scalp. your scalp needs to be able to breathe in order to produce hair like it should. grease can be used to seal in moisture but the only problem is that you will not be able to moisturise your hair until the grease has been washed off. opt for natural oils such as castor oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, argan oil e.t.c

    • Wear protective styles
Wearing hairstyles that require low manipulation or keep your ends hidden will definitely help you to maintain your length. When hair rubs against clothing it tends to break off. this is why many women tend to have long hair in the middle of their heads and then it gets shorter at the back. examples of protective styles include buns, ponytails, weaves, wigs, braids, scarves, hats, braid outs, bantu knot outs e.t.c.
    • Use wide toothed combs
always use a wide toothed comb this will save you a lot of hair, also remember to comb from the ends upwards and in a downward motion.

    • Massage your scalp regularly
stimulate your scalp into producing hair by treating it to scalp massages regularly. this will increase blood circulation in your scalp and thus hair growth. excercising  regularly also plays the same role.
    • Avoid getting major trims to often
If you keep trimming off your hair regularly you might end up never seeing a change in your length. try dusting your ends instead. this means that instead of trimming off an inch or more of your hair you just take off a 1/4 of an inch this is really very little hair and it won´t make a difference to your length. should you discover a split end just take a pair of sharp hair scissors and cut them off immediately.this is called the search and destroy method and is very effective.

    • Cover your head with silk/ satin scarves.
covering your with a silk/ satin scarf will keep your hair from drying out and from breaking due to friction while you sleep. this will save your edges and keep your hair moisturised.

    • Stretch your relaxers
If you relax your hair try to wait at least 8 weeks before getting a retouch this will help reduce the number of times your previously relaxed hair comes into contact with relaxers. also make sure that the relaxer is only applied to the new growth and not to previously relaxed hair. overlapping relaxers causes thinning hair and breakage.

I have just finished reading the chicoro´s "grow it" and decided to try out her method of making a leave in conditioner. and i must say it worked great. This might help you if you are still looking for a good leave in conditioner. the best part is that you can determine exactly what you want to have in it.
a leave in conditioner determines how your hair will generally look after washing. especially if you plan to air dry your hair a good leave in will definitely come in handy. this helps the hair not to end up frizzy and dull.

Here is how i  made my leave in conditioner.

    1.  75mL of my cheap conditioner. i prefer to use a cheap moisturising conditioner that is silicon free.
    2. water about 100mL
    3. Glycerin and / aloe vera gel
    4. Oils( castor oil, olive oil, coconut oil and tea tree oil) at least a tea spoon of each. Note: Tea tree oil on it´s own is an essential oil so just use a few drops (2-3 drops).
I just mixed everything together in a spray bottle. it turned out very creamy and it left my hair very soft and manageable after air drying. i also noticed that my hair looked shiny even though i hadn´t moisturised and sealed yet. you can just substitute the products i used with the ones you like i´m sure it will turn out just right.

I just remembered that i have to do a protein treatment this week and thought why not blog about it a little bit. the organic root stimulator replenishing conditioner is my absolute favourite protein treatment. Although it is a protein it does not leave the hair hard after rinsing out and it smells great. i try to do protein treatments every two weeks. depending on how much damage you have, you might want to do it every week until the damage has been repaired. however damage to the ends can only be cured by cutting of the damaged ends. Protein makes your hair stronger and therefore keeps it healthy. i always mix my protein DC with my moisture DC to maintain the moisture protein balance. The ORS replenishing conditioner comes in different packages i have used them all and love them all but i think the large bottle is much more economical.

When i first started my hair journey i didn´t know which moisturising deep conditioner was best for my hair, so i started trying out as many as i could. but i kept in mind to get only those with healthy ingredients for my hair. after a long period of trials and errors i finaly found the perfect moisturising deep conditioner for my hair. the Lustrasilk mango shea butter cholesterol. i fell in love with this product the first time i used it. Although i add my oils and other things i love to it when i deep conidition my hair, it works just as well on it´s own.
it contains shea butter which is a great moisturiser, vitamin E, wheat germ oil & soybean oil which are light proteins aloe vera which is also a great moisturiser, mango and many more. apart from all these wonderful components this stuff leaves my hair very soft and it smells great too!

word of advice to you, try out new products to find out what works best for you. what works great for one person may not work as great for another person.

So I have wanted to flat Iron my new growth and rock a straight look for a while now.My only problem was I had a very limited budget and all the Heat Protectors were way out of my league.Being in a Healthy Hair Journey I wouldn't sacrifice the progress I've made to a voluntary heat damage!!So i was just trying to find alternatives of the product that I could find at a cheaper price. That's how I ended up finding  lots of Information about the amazing Grape seed Oil.
The most amazing bit is that It is all natural,eco-friendly and way cheaper than any other good heat protector in the Market. It has a very high heat tolerance of upto 420°F/215°C..Most Flat Irons/hair straighteners have a maximum heat capacity of 210 °C.So what does this mean?
It means that if you apply grape seed oil in your hair before using direct heat , not unless the heat is higher than 425 degrees your hair is so protected.t
The oil can withstand upto 420°F before reaching its boiling point. For Instance, if you were to use water, or an oil with a boiling point of 100°C yet the heat source is more than 100°Cs (which is often the case) then you are literally frying your tresses...
I am going to use the oil tonight to pre-poo/hot oil treatment as the oil is light and quickly absorbed into the hair strands, heating grapeseed oil and applying it to the scalp and hair ends greatly helps to make hair shiny, reducing brittleness, and in this case it will help protect my hair from shampoo harshness!I might mix it in my Deep Conditioners too..stay connected to see my experience and personal verdict about this highly praised oil!

I once went to a hair supply store with a friend and our aim was to find some coconut oil. We did find a product written very boldly COCONUT OIL and we decided to check the ingredients list and i must say the information was shocking! it had all sorts of ingredients but we couldn´t find coconut oil anywhere on that list. the last thing i remember reading about was fragrance and then it hit me that the product had coconut oil fragrance in it. Note: fragrances are nothing like the real thing. they are made in a laboratory and have absolutely no benefits compared to the real deal.

I remember while i was still in high school i used a shampoo which didn´t have a name it was just called shampoo! and the conditioner i used was called conditioner! thinking back now only God knows what i was putting in my hair because there was no description or ingredients list whatsoever. thank God that i know better today.
so why am i sharing these stories?

This was a big lesson for me and it might just help you too. i learnt that not all products are what they claim to be. so be sure to check what is in your product and don´t get products without an ingredients list because you don´t know what is in them. Your hair will thank you for it.

Air drying was one of the steps in my hair journey that really helped me retain health. this is a very good option as to using heat since heat dries out the hair and may end up ruining the hair shaft. however most ladies do not like air drying their hair because of getting frizzy hair. In my opinion you should always try out new things and find out what works for your hair, sometimes the products that work great for one person may be a nightmare for the other person so just find out what your hair likes. here is a picture loaded video of how i air dry my hair. note that i´m almost 11 weeks post relaxer in this video and still my hair turns out very soft and without frizz which i absolutely love. i have also listed all the products i use and how.

So I bought this product just for a change from my usual ORS replenishing conditioner.I used it for the first time today and my very first review is that it is awesome!!!..I have to try it a couple more times but I do love how my hair feels.I did not use any other products in my hair so I would be able to give a precise review of this Deep Conditioner...

    PROS:
1.I detangled my hair using a wide tooth shower comb immediately after I came from Deep conditioning under my hooded dryer & I experienced zero to no breakage.I proceeded to rinse off the DC and again I saw very few strands of shedded hairs but no breakage.

2.I air dried my hair after rinsing.I Only applied little whipped unrefined Shea butter after the wash and my hair feels super - soft yet so strong.

3.I combed my hair after it was dry & Again very little if any breakage..
Verdict:I will definitely be repurchasing this product mainly to alternate with the other named above.

    Con:
It's not really a bad thing but since this product is mainly meant for salon use there are NO instructions for using it without a drier...I used my hooded bonnet & people without it might feel a bit let down. However, it is a light protein(judging by how my hair feels)and I'm guessing leaving it in your hair under a plastic cap or even covering over with a warm towel should do just fine.it's however advisable to always deep condition with heat!!

I started my hair journey in February 2010 at shoulder length. before this time i had totaly no idea that african hair could actually grow long. Since i had moved to Germany in 2006 i had to do my own hair and i kept getting annoyed that my ends always were damaged, my bathroom floor was always covered with broken hairs and i knew there had to be another way to care for it. i started googling about caring for relaxed hair and all of a sudden i had so much information gathered but best of all was that i too could grow my relaxed hair healthy and long. i watched videos of black women with lovely long relaxed hair and i was hooked i just had to get that too. i haven´t been to stop since then.

this was before my hair journey

    this was in july 2011

my hair is now below shoulder blade and i am just so proud of myself  for not giving up. African hair can grow long!

Daily/Regular moisturising with a moisturising lotion during the week is great for our hair. However, it is nothing compared to what a good moisturising deep conditioner (M.DC) does. Most ladies find that they only need to protein-treat their hairs when need be but they still use the moisturising deep conditioner weekly!

Please understand that most moisturising conditioners do contain some mild proteins which is very okay. Wheat& Silk amino acids are examples of mild proteins that you are likely to find in the M.DC. They actually play a good role in that they enhance ability of moisture to bind with the cuticle!

How to find your Moisturising Conditioner

    1. Check for a lot of fatty alcohols. In a M.DC, fatty alcohols (the only good alcohols for hair) would include : cetyl alcohol, stearyl alohol & miristyl alcohol.

    1. Check for Humectants (are hygroscopic substances that draw water from the environment!) and emollients (they increase hydration by reducing evaporation) Humectants, Emollients and other conditioning agents include: Glycerin, Polyquaternium, Propylene Glycol, Polypropylene, centrimonium chloride, Sodium lactate and other natural waxes and oils.

    1. Check for very few light Silicones. Silicones ‘cones’ are not always hair-friendly but one or two in the ingredients actually help detangle wet hair..these are not necessary you can do without!

    1. Finally and the most important ingredient which should be the first listed, is Aqua ( water).

    1. Please avoid as much as possible M.DCs with petrolatum/mineral oil/parraffinium etc as these will only coat your hair! A little mineral oil (like almost last ingredient in the list) can be ignored as you will wash off any way. But avoid it in your cheapie conditioners and leave-in. Avoid heavy proteins and heavy oils too.
