Grow African Hair Long GAHL

  • I am sure we have all heard this one, Trimming your hair causes it to grow. But how true is it?

Fact: Trimming does not make hair grow faster but it does play a big role in length retention and in keeping your looking healthier.

The ends of your hair are the oldest part of your hair and with age hair will have gone through so much trauma (heat, combing, touching etc.) at some point the ends start to weather and we see that in form of split ends. There are protein based conditioners that temporarily repair damaged hair but there is only one long term solution and that is cutting off the damaged ends.

Trimmed ends not only make styling easier and gives the hair an overall healthier appearance but it also greatly reduces breakage because of less knots and tangles which usually cause resistance while detangling. Less breakage means the ends won’t be breaking off and as a result you retain length.

Here are a few ways to tell if you need a trim.
    1. No matter how well detangled the hair is, the comb still doesn’t go through with ease.
    2. Visible split ends, knots and tangles
    3. The ends of the hair still look rugged even when heat is applied.
    4. The ends are visibly much thinner than the rest of the hair.

    When was your last trim?
How often do you trim your hair?

Most of us think that our hair doesn't grow or it grew and stopped but that is really not the case. Hair grows and for most people(human beings) at an average of 0.5 inches per month.

The reason why we do not see a significant difference in the length of our hair is because of poor hair care practices that make our hair break faster than it grows.
Proof that hair grows(for those who do braids with extensions it's easy to see that the braids get looser at the roots, that's not the braid getting loose it is your hair growing) the same thing applies to colored hair and relaxed hair because you can literally track how fast your hair grows.

Now that we know that hair grows we need to learn how to keep that growth. A good place to start is to understand that the ends of your hair are the oldest, weakest and at the same time what you need to pay most attention to if your aim is to retain length. The ends of your hair are your length, the longer you keep them on your head the longer your hair will grow.

Here is how to keep your ends healthy for length retention.
    1. Trim your ends as needed
If your aim is to retain length you shouldn't over trim your ends but you should make sure that they are always in good shape. Trimming off 1/4 of an inch every 4 months is reasonable. But if you don't need a trim don't trim.
    1. Moisturize your ends!
Do not wait for your ends to dry out in order to moisturize them. Make it a habit to keep them moisturized (at least every two days)
    1. seal in moisture with an oil
After moisturizing please seal in the moisture with an oil or butter.
    1. Keep your hair stretched.
Wearing your hair in a shrunken state causes too much tangling and  knotting which eventually leads to breakage.
    1. wear protective hairstyles

Protective hairstyles such as braids, weaves, wigs, buns, plaits, twists etc that keep your ends hidden, tucked in or up will reduce friction with your clothes and therefore encourage length retention.

Hallo beautiful people, although my Monday is almost over I just had to share what is in my heart today.  I am going to take you back to the old Testament today. There are quite a number of prophets in the old testament but one of them really stands out for  me. He lived a very Holy life and depended on God despite the difficult situations that came his way.

Daniel was even put in a Lion's den and the lions did not touch Him.
Sometimes life throws hard balls at us and it is so easy to get discouraged and to want to give up. But taking Daniel's example we learn that with our God nothing is impossible. He is able to turn every situation around if only we put our trust fully in Him.
I pray that God will send His Angel to shut the mouths of any Lions roaring in your life in Jesus Name.
Scripture reference for today is Daniel 6

Thanks for reading and stay blessed.

I finally undid my braids at 5 weeks post installation. I had missed my hair so much. I thank God that there was no damage done to my hair and my hairline is still intact.
A week after undoing the braids I decided to give flat twists out a chance. So I went on you tube and Watched lots of videos on how to get a perfect twist out. I had tried them before but they just never looked like the ones I saw in the videos.  This time round I did things a little different. First of all I did the flat twists on freshly washed and conditioned hair. Then I detangled each section very well after applying a little cantu Shea butter leave in and coconut oil, these two products made detangling very easy for me.
I even improved on my flat twisting skills yay! I really love how this one came out and I cannot wait to perfect it.
The Gahl length retention challenge has also come to an end and I will be sharing my progress on my next blog post. I am really excited to find out how much length I retained in three months.
My selfies still have a long way to go(*wink*)

It has been a little over a month and the Gahl length retention challenge is on!!! I know I have not shared much about the challenge so far, but I promise that this post will inform you about everything I have been doing with my hair during the first month of the challenge.

    My hair products
My hair care routine is very simple right now. I wash my hair once a week with plain water and condition it using the Herbal essences hello hydration conditioner. I know that this conditioner contains silicones but it works for my hair. After washing I apply a mixture of water, olive oil and a little herbal essences as my leave in conditioner. I do not recommend using a rinse out conditioner such as the herbal essences as a leave in but until I find a leave in that really works for my hair, I will keep on using it. after applying the leave in conditioner I part my hair according to how I want to style it for the week and then I let it air dry. Very simple don´t you agree?

My hair has got three different textures which I am really trying hard to understand because they all behave different. The back of my hair and the edges have very loose curls, the middle has corkscrew spirals which look amazing but shrink like nobody´s business ( during my long-term transition to natural I thought that the middle had really tight curls but that is actually not the case) I will try to take better pictures so you can understand what I mean. The front of my head definitely has looser curls with little definition when compared to the rest of my hair. I am still very amazed that one head of hair can have many different textures African hair is just amazing!
The pictures above show the texture of my hair right after washing and before applying any product to my hair.

pony puff: I wore this hairstyle for almost two weeks

As for styling, I recently started making my hair lie down using gel, a soft hair brush and a scarf. This trio never backfires on me. I thank God for this discovery. Normally after air drying my hair, I try as much as possible not to touch my hair. This way my curls stay defined until my next wash (I just spray a little of my leave in conditioner nightly). The only thing I deal with every night are the edges which I moisten, apply some gel and then slick down with my hands and brush. The rest of the magic is done by the scarf.
This method has made protective styling quite easy for me because it helps mould my hair and keep it in place. and it looks good too!

My tools of trade. soft brush, Enliven hair gel  and wide toothed comb

I hardly ever comb my hair these days, I literally detangle my hair about twice a month. Most of the time I just use my fingers and conditioner to detangle my hair and so far it is working very well. I choose not to detangle using the comb too often just to give my hair a break from too much manipulation. Low manipulation keeps the hair from breaking off unnecessarily.
